The Purpose of School

by Randy Wagoner

Why is an education important for our children? This question is vitally important to ask and answer as our children grow. Although learning will occur incidentally, it is essential that certain aspects of this learning be directed. The original purpose of schools in our American society was two fold. First it was to develop good God fearing people and secondly to instruct future citizens on how to be active participants in a democratic government.  These two purposes, although bantered about over the years, have remained essentially very similar. USD 447 makes consistent efforts to assist our students in developing the skills and knowledge that will encourage their development. These skills and knowledge include: the basics such as Math, Science, Language Arts/Reading, and Social Science, as well as Fine Arts, Vocational fields, Physical Education, Technology and the processes of handling information and learning. The socialization process that accompanies the pursuit of the prior mentioned skills and knowledge is essential in preparing our students on how to live and contribute to our democratic society as adults. The rules, procedures, routines, extra-curricular activities and interactions with other students and adults in appropriate ways are important. They can provide a basis for living and being productive in society as they graduate and pursue their dreams and careers.
