Bully Prevention Ideas

by Randy Wagoner

Although bullying has been around for many year even centuries, it does not mean that we must accept it as a part of life. Bullies are often times persons that need our help and are crying out for it. Others are simply people that have not developed appropriate interpersonal skills. In any event bullying must be addressed. USD 447 has a policy against it and will work to eliminate and/or mitigate it. In the event that students are bullied several suggestions are offered her to deal with it. First time bulling events might be ignored. When bullies do not get a desired response from victims they simply might stop. If it reoccurs the victim needs to make sure that they are calm and do not respond with emotion but mature calmness by politely asking the bully to stop their actions because it is not appreciated. If the actions persist, then students are encouraged to firmly request that the actions stop or they will be reported. Finally, if it does not stop then the bully must be reported to a responsible adult in the school, administration, and parents. In the event that bullying activities are extreme or very dangerous this final step should be taken on first offense.  Every effort needs to be taken to assure that the learning environment is preserved and bullying is an activity that is not tolerated. No one likes bullying but a sure way to stop it is to do what we can to deal with it and ideally assist the bully in stopping any further bullying behaviors. Treating bullies with kindness, calmness and concern is encouraged. Also include them in your circle of friends as long as they control their behavior. Remember being friendly to bullies when they do not bully may allow them to correct their inappropriate behaviors. If a bully does not discipline himself or herself they will need to be disciplined.
