Mineral Belt League Music Festival

Thayer middle school students and director Kara Sparks hosted the Mineral Belt League music festival last Friday. Other participating schools were Altoona-Midway, Chetopa, and Oswego. Orville Walker and Herb Correll, both of Chanute, were the instrumental judges, and Susan Gouldie of Chanute was the vocal judge.
Students were given ratings, with I being the best. The band performed “I’ve Got Peace like a River” and “Tribute to Heroes” and received a I rating. The girl’s ensemble of Katie Berg, Kristin Coatney, Hollie Holtzman, Jordan Loyd, Kelsey Phillips, Tequila Ray, Emilee Reed, and Brenna Robertson performed “Aura Lee” and also received a I rating.
Katie Berg also received a I rating for her vocal solo, “Still as the Night.” Lane Raida received a I+ rating for his trumpet solo, “Simple Gifts,” Dylan Dyke also received a I+ rating for his alto saxophone solo, “A Quempas Tune,” and Trenton Smedley performed alto saxophone solo, “Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and received a I+ rating as well.
