April Special Board of Education Meeting 2014
Unified School District #447
April 23, 2014
The special meeting of the Cherryvale Unified School District #447 Board of Education was called to order by President Gina Booe at 6:00 p.m. at the Cherryvale Middle/High School Library. Present were Gina Booe, Joe Marchant, Michelle Loganbill, John Potthast, Robert John, Cody Smith and Randy Studebaker.
Also present were Tonya Smedley, Kim Martin, Marla Sterling, Marvin Hestand, George Owens, Superintendent Randy Wagoner and Board Clerk Karen Conner.
A. Motion was made by John Potthast, seconded by Robert John, to accept the resignations of April Billington, Secondary Language Arts teacher; Angela Barnett, CHMS office aide; and Julie Hodgden, LC maintenance. Motion carried 7-0.
B. Options for either renovation or replacement of the bleachers in the CHMS gymnasium were discussed. Renovations would include realigning and repair of frames, brackets and supports, installation of aisle hand rails, installation of video platform, installation of seven motorized drive units and to provide ADA notchouts at a cost of $59,248. New bleacher installation would cost between $160,000 to $180,000. Board President Gina Booe declared a recess at 6:15 to allow board members to view and inspect the current bleachers. Meeting reconvened at 6:27 p.m. It was the consensus of the Board to take no action at this time, but to have the maintenance crew check and tighten brackets, secure step blocks, and investigate the possibility of a mule to aide in pulling the bleachers out.
C. The Board reviewed a letter from Charles Petersen, Liberty Township Trustee, requesting that USD 447 endorse their request to be removed from the CCC taxing district and added to the ICC taxing district. It was the consensus of the Board to instruct Superintendent Randy Wagoner to write an indifferent letter, leaving it in ICC’s hands if they wish to endorse the request to the Kansas State Board of Regents to place the issue on the Fall, 2014 ballots.
D. Early childhood programs were discussed. The Board requested that Superintendent Wagoner focus on Pre-School options, including both 3-year olds and 4-year olds, and to report back to the Board.
E. Student gate fees are currently $3.00 for Varsity, $2.00 for Junior Varsity and $1.00 for Middle School activities with Student passes available for $12.00. Superintendent Wagoner has received a request to bring the gate fees to the Board for consideration of the possibility of free student passes. It was the consensus of the Board to ask Athletic Director Rodney Vigil for possible proposals, including family passes based on semester periods.
F. Superintendent Randy Wagoner updated the Board regarding progress on the additional Vocational Agriculture teacher.
President Gina Booe adjourned the meeting at 7:20 p.m.
