A Message from Our Superintendent:

Dear USD 447 Patrons and Staff,

Welcome to the start of a new school year. I am excited to join the Cherryvale-Thayer school system as your new superintendent.

As we begin our new year together, I am working with our board of education to establish a clear mission and direction for the district as we engage in a series of special board meetings to develop a long-term strategic plan for the district’s future. This is an exciting time, but some important things will remain unchanged. USD 447 will remain a school district where students come first; a district where students feel welcome, safe, and nurtured; and a district that prepares students for a successful future. More detail on district’s specific vision and plans for the future will be coming soon.

To let you know a little about me and my family, my husband Bob and I are both originally from Southeast Kansas. I grew up on the family farm a few miles west of Sycamore, and most of my family is farming there still. Our two grandchildren (ages 4 and 10) and their parents also live nearby in Fredonia. I spent the first 10 years of my career teaching language arts in Fredonia. I moved to Garden City, where I spent 5 years as a high school administrator, and the next 7 years as assistant superintendent. For the past six years I have been the superintendent in Hutchinson. I have been fortunate to gain many leadership and educational experiences during my time in larger districts.

Now I look forward to applying what I’ve learned over the past 18 years back here in Southeast Kansas. A personal belief of mine is that students of small, rural schools should receive an education that allows them to go anywhere in the world, but also creates the ability and desire to make a good living in their hometown. I look forward to bringing that personal vision to life as we strengthen our students “roots and wings” here in Cherryvale-Thayer schools.

I look forward to meeting all of you in the weeks and months ahead.

Sincerely,

“Dr. K”
