CHS Chess Club
By Siobhan Simmons
Chess club creates a competitive academic environment for High School and Middle School students while fostering strong ethics and good sportsmanship.
The season lasts a hefty 35 weeks, beginning one week after school begins, running until the end of April. Team members compete two times a month at scholastic tournaments to qualify for state competition in March. Simple and advanced chess skills are learned at practices held every Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:00 to 5:00p.m.
A few of the many benefits of being involved with chess are: an increased aptitude for concentration, patience and perseverance, chess promotes efficient problem solving, chess has been shown to raise overall levels of intelligence, and chess players demonstrate increased expertise in the making of tough and abstract decisions. Chess sponsor is Roy Kenast.
